Big push on to certify beef

IRELAND - A major campaign is underway to maximise the number of Laois beef farmers certified under the Bord Bia Beef Quality Assurance Scheme.

The campaign has the full support of farming organisations, meat factories and Teagasc and auditing of all farms applying in 2006 is free of charge.

The Laois campaign was launched recently on the farm of Joe and Mary Mansfield, Levalley, Rathdowney. The scheme, which was revised last year, is now accredited to the highest European standard and involves independent inspection and certification of beef producers. This ensures that purchasers of Irish beef can have complete confidence in the safety and quality of the product.

“I have full confidence in the high standards that exist on Laois farms. But the realities of international marketing demand that these high standards are independently verified. That is why it is so important that Laois farmers sign up to the scheme,” said Aidan Cotter, Bord Bia Chief Executive.
