Nationally, numbers at MLA’s NLRS reported saleyards fell 16% compared to the same time last week as vendors showed some resistance to the recent price falls. Victoria yarded 24% less and SA 30% lower numbers, with only NSW increasing, albeit only marginally.

Cattle quality is continuing to be effected by the dry conditions, with most centres receiving mixed conditioned stock. Light and young unfinished stock has comprised a larger proportion of the market, with old cows also being forced into the saleyards.

Grown steers, particularly heavy weights, have been difficult to source, with so many younger stock sold off during the August and September period this trend could be longer term in the physical markets. Most cattle going onto grain to be grown out are already contracted with only limited southern Queensland custom feeding enquiry due to the high cost of feeding at present.
