Japanese beef imports slide during August
AUSTRALIA - Japanese beef imports during August slipped 5% on the same period last year to 33,911 tonnes, contributing to a 6% fall in beef imports during the first eight months of 2006, to 302,990 tonnes.Japan imported a total of 17,514 tonnes of chilled beef and 16,397 tonnes of frozen beef in August – down 6% and 4% respectively on year ago levels.
Beef imports from Australia accounted for 94% of total chilled beef imports, and 81% of total frozen beef imports, to total 29,807 tonnes. The value of beef imports from Australia totalled 14.8 billion yen or A$168 million. Japanese imports of New Zealand beef during August were down 18% on the same period last year, at 3,145 tonnes, while imports from Mexico, Chile, Vanuatu, Anguilla, Panama, and Costa Rica fell 42%, to 632 tonnes.
