Snow has been down to about 500 metres in Hawke's Bay and inland parts of Gisborne, with high winds in exposed areas.

Steve Kellegher who runs a farm on the Napier-Taihape Highway, has about 46,000 ewes and is just over halfway through lambing.

He says easing conditions, forecast for Friday night, do not hold much comfort.

Most escaped worst - Most farmers in the central North Island say they have escaped the worst effects of the cold snap because lambing is almost over.
