South-west farmers dig in heels over disease levy, because of lack of TB action

UK - The south-west NFU is urging the union nationally not to enter any discussions with the government about the imposition of a disease ‘levy’ until it acts against TB in badgers.

Livestock board chairman Michael Weaver said the government had failed to deliver on its promised “partnership approach” in dealing with livestock diseases, particularly regarding a badger cull.

“Our members are telling us that they are at the end of their tether when it comes to all the additional costs and controls being imposed upon them and their cattle without the government lifting a finger to deal with the principal cause of this notifiable disease which is running rampant and uncontrolled in the wildlife population,” he said.
