Canadians are also making a point of supporting domestic producers. 88 percent selected homegrown beef compared to 12 percent that pruchased imported beef.

The Beef Information Center says its commercial beef utilization strategy has helped to drive the increase. The program promotes the use of lower quality Canadian beef as an alternative to product from New Zealand or South America. That is important because cattle over the age of 30 months are still not allowed into the United States due to BSE regulations.
