Tazul Arifin, the director of engineering at Medan city's slaughterhouse, said Thursday that 333 imported Australian cows had arrived in Belawan Port on Wednesday night and were currently undergoing health examinations.

"The cows are being imported as part of a memorandum of understanding signed with AustSteer Export Ltd., Australia, to supply beef to Medan during Ramadhan and ahead of Idul Fitri," said Tazul, adding that the agreement was made three years ago.

He said AustSteer would also send frozen meat once the slaughterhouse had an adequate cold storage facility.

T. Azwar Aziz, the head of the provincial trade and industry office, said there was a high demand for beef.
