FMD Outbreak Reported in Russia

RUSSIA - The Russian veterinary authorities have reported a further outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Amurskaya Oblast affecting cattle.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 21 on Friday, 29 November. Antigen (Ag) detection ELISA and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were conducted on 28 November FGBI "Federal Centre for Animal Health", confirming the presence of the FMD virus, serotype A.

According to the report, a total of 519 cattle were found susceptible, out of which one animal was found to be affected. No deaths were recorded, and no animals were slaughtered and/or destroyed.

The OIE reports that the outbreak is in the buffer zone. It is near the state border of Russia and China.

The OIE, or the country's veterinary authorities, are still not able to determine the source of the outbreak(s).
