Argentinean Beef Production Continues To Fall
ARGENTINA - Beef production in Argentina fell by 21.8 per cent between January and September 2010, to 1.98 million tons, according to a report of the Chamber of Industry and Trade of Meat and Derivatives (Ciccra), released last week.

The slaughter of animals in the period fell 24.5 per cent to nine million head. The Ciccra said last August that 41 per cent of the slaughtered animals were females.
"This percentage was the lowest since August 2006, confirming that began to creep in July: the beginning of a new phase retention bellies to replenish stocks and thus to recover the activity of the meatpacking industry over the next three years, "said the UN report.

Also in the report, the industry says that the average annual consumption of beef per capita fell 16.5 per cent to 57.1 kilos. From January to September this year, exports have also suffered sharp fall.
Only 154,589 tons were exported, representing a decline of approximately 50 per cent. The Ciccra argues that the severe crisis faced by the sector is due to a permanent reduction in supply in recent years, caused by the policy of government intervention and for long periods of drought. The combination of these factors caused a change in behavior of most farmers, who decided to plant soybeans, due to its high profitability.
