This scholarship is open to all young people involved in the beef cattle industry, not only those involved with Angus. There are no educational pre-requisites with the course tailored to suit each individual.

Previous recipients have described the experience as ‘life changing’ with many now holding influential positions in the livestock and meat industries both here and overseas.

Kate Hallawell from Albury, NSW, the 2009 winner, said winning the scholarship provided a once in a lifetime experience.

“This scholarship gave me the opportunity not only to travel and study overseas but also the chance to gain an insight to the different beef cattle operations and more specifically the US beef industry”, she said.

The 2008 MSU scholar, Shelley Piper, who is now gaining experience at a Queensland feedlot through the MLA’s graduate training program, said her time in the USA was unbelievable. “The knowledge and experience it has to offer young people in the beef industry is invaluable and I strongly encourage people to apply in the future.”

The Beef Industry Development officer with Victoria’s DPI based in Hamilton, Vic, Melissa Neal, was the 2006 MSU scholar. “Receiving the 2006 Michigan State University Scholarship has been a great honour. I have been very lucky to have traveled extensively around North America.”, she said.

The scholarship winner will receive a return ticket to the USA to study for a semester at the Michigan State University, up to $A2000 for enrolment fees for an approved subject and $A2000 towards accommodation. There is also a place on the July/August Semex Genetics beef breeder’s tour of the USA accompanied by Semex staff.

Applications close on March 25 2010. For more information go to www.angusaustralia.com.au or contact the Angus Youth Coordinator Jo Milward on 02 6773 4608 or [email protected].
