This year, more than 17,000 live cattle have been exported to Indonesia from the port, reports ABC Rural.

New owner Steven Grose says despite it being shallow and only letting small ships in, it should remain profitable.

Livestock exporters share the port with the MMG Century mine which is due to end in six years, but Mr Grose says the industry can survive without the mine.

"In the future we'll be hoping that the port and ourselves will be able to sit down and have a discussion," he says.

"We're just hoping in the future a few more smaller ships that can access Karumba will be built."
