The launch of the scheme was marked last week when Michelin-starred chef Andrea Berton cooked a menu of special beef dishes for the Italian gastronomy press and colleagues.

The showcase event, held in a food development centre near Milan, also marks the start of a marketing campaign focusing on the quality assurance of the beef supplied under the scheme.

"The launch marks the start of a programme which will further widen penetration of the Italian market with Quality Standard beef," said Jean-Pierre Garnier, Export Manager for EBLEX.

"The product has been sold into a number of top Italian restaurants since the end of 2006, and volumes have continued to rise fast. This is the next step."

Mr Garnier said that Italian chefs are very knowledgeable about beef eating quality and that EBLEX are proud they recognise the quality of the product and are committing to supplying it at this level.

Total exports of prime UK beef to Italy are expected to top 7,000 tonnes this year.
