FSA: Untested Bullock Enters UK Food Chain

UK - The Agency has been notified that a bullock aged over 48 months has entered the food supply without having been tested for BSE. However, as specified risk material (SRM) was removed, and it is unlikely that the bullock was infected with BSE, any risk to human health is extremely low.

SRM is those parts of the carcass at risk of carrying BSE infectivity.

The bullock was 15 days past the 48 months age limit when it was slaughtered on 17 April 2009 at N Bramall & Sons abattoir in Oxspring, near Sheffield.

The error was discovered on 18 June during routine cross checks of slaughter and BSE test data. By then, all of the affected meat and offal had left the slaughterhouse. Subsequent checks indicate that all of the product remained within the UK and is likely to have been consumed
