UFU Beef and Lamb Chairman, William Taylor comments; “We will be discussing this issue with our Beef and Lamb, Hill Farming and Dairy Committee’s very shortly. The Red Meat industry is vitally important to the Northern Ireland economy and this review will give producers on the ground an opportunity to determine what role, if any, the LMC should play in the future.

“The LMC is currently funded through compulsory levies from producers and processors and therefore it is only right that they are the ones who determine its future. The LMC currently carries out activities such as the marketing and promotion of NI beef and lamb, market analysis, price reporting, Farm Quality Assurance and Carcass Classification and Grading. We will be asking our members to what extent they value these services and will also be speaking to producers concerning their expectations from the LMC and their future role in the Northern Ireland Beef and Sheep Industry.”

Mr Taylor added; “As DARD and the LMC have both agreed that the present status quo is not an option, I would like to emphasise to our members that they now have the ideal platform to put forward any concerns or suggestions regarding the future functionality of the LMC.”
