Aussie Association Concerned Over ETS Costs

AUSTRALIA - The new president of the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association says he will be fighting to stop carbon trading schemes from sending the beef industry into the red.

Mataranka cattle industry leader Rohan Sullivan has been elected the new president of the association, reports ABCNews.

According to the news agency, he says beef operations in Australia have never been particularly profitable, however the imposition of extra costs under the emissions trading scheme could make the industry financially unviable.

"I'm aware of a study that showed by 2030 it was possible that 25 per cent of the costs of a beef operation in Australia would be comprised of emissions trading costs," he said.

"I just can't see how an industry can sustain that."
