He was Angus Australia’s Breed Development Manager from 1996 to 2001 and currently holds senior roles with the NSW Department of Primary Industries as Research Leader, Beef Genetics and Improvement Unit and Director, Beef Industry Centre of Excellence.

Angus Australia’s President John Young said the breed was indeed fortunate to attract such a high profile CEO to continue to expand the influence of Australian Angus both nationally and internationally in a rapidly changing livestock genetics industry and in the current challenging global financial situation.

Peter Parnell has developed a reputation, in Australia and world-wide, as an authority in the application of genetic technology in animal breeding and improvement, especially in the beef cattle industry, and has been invited to make presentations at seminars and workshops throughout Australia and in the USA, Canada, Argentina and New Zealand.

“Peter Parnell has been involved with beef cattle all his professional life and has demonstrated a genuine passion for the industry and this, along with his outstanding qualifications and high level experience, made him an outstanding candidate for the position,” said Mr. Young.

He has successfully led several large projects in NSW DPI and the Beef Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) including ‘Feed Efficiency, Maternal Productivity and Responsible Resource Use’, ‘Accelerating Adoption through Sustainable Beef Profit Partnerships’ and ‘Integration and Delivery of Beef CRC Technologies’.

He is a member of a sub-committee of the Primary Industries Standing Committee responsible for developing the National Beef Industry Strategic Plan currently before the Primary Industries Ministerial Committee. He was also a member of the successful Beef CRC Re-Bid Committee involving the development of research strategy for the current seven year CRC program,

Dr Parnell is currently chairman of the BREEDPLAN Technical Liaison Group and a member of the board of management of the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU). In addition, he is co-convener of the NSW DPI Beef Industry Liaison Committee and the NSW DPI representative on the Southern Australian Beef Research Council.

Dr Parnell commences with Angus Australia in May. In the meantime Carel Teseling will continue his role as acting CEO, a position he has held since the departure of Graham Truscott last November.
