CME: Beef Export Data Remains Mixed

24 December 2018

US - Steiner Consulting Group, DLR Division, Inc. reports that weekly export data for beef muscle cuts were released last Thursday morning by USDA-FAS.

Export data for beef remains mixed. While we continue to see strong shipments to all major markets, export sales have slowed down considerably and sooner or later this will be reflected in the export numbers.

In the four weeks ending 13 December, US beef exports have averaged 17,126 MT, eight percent higher than the same period a year ago. Exports to Japan during this period were up 17.7 percent and exports to South Korea were up 23.7 percent.

However, export sales during this period declined 53.5 percent compared to the same period last year. Combined outstanding beef sales remain 16 percent ahead of last year’s pace at this time, which should continue to support higher export shipments in the near term.

But if the slowdown in beef export sales persists, it will cause market participants to scale back their expectations for US beef exports in Q1 of 2019.
