Continued pressure for the prime cattle trade

The cattle trade once again demonstrated the fine balance between supply and demand. Overall, prices came back on the week as numbers coming forward moved up, compared to the disrupted previous Easter week. At 31,000 head, AHDB estimates suggest that numbers were 2,900 head up on the week earlier, the highest weekly level for some weeks.

The GB prime cattle average price was back another two pence on the week earlier at 315.9p/kg. It has now fallen more than 10p/kg over the past four weeks. R4L steers came back 3p on the week to average 327.5p/kg while heifers meeting the same spec were back 2p to also average 327.5p/kg. Despite this malaise in the trade, reports suggest that demand for cattle meeting supermarket specification is still somewhat robust, as chill rooms are not as full as they were a short time ago. Despite this, in some areas, short waiting lists are still around for more commercial type cattle. As always, with the market under pressure producers will maximise their opportunities by targeting the right cattle to particular buyers.
