United States Cattle on Feed Up Three Per Cent

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.7 million head on March 1, 2012. The inventory was three per cent above March 1, 2011.

Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.71 million, thre per cent above 2011. Net placements were 1.62 million head. During February, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 400,000, 600-699 pounds were 335,000, 700-799 pounds were 469,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 510,000.

Marketing of fed cattle during February totaled 1.76 million, two per cent below 2011.

Other disappearance of fed cattle during February totaled 1.76 million, two per cent below 2011.

Cattle on Feed - No Big Surprises
USDA's February cattle on feed report had no big surprises. USDA said February placements of cattle into large feed yards (over 1,000 head capacity) were 2.8 per cent higher than in February 2011. The average of pre-release trade forecasts was for February placements to be up 2.7 per cent, writes Ron Plain, University of Missouri.

As Expected, Cattle on Feed Higher
USDA released their monthly Cattle on Feed report Friday afternoon (Mar 23). The report showed that 11.677 million head of cattle were in feedlots with 1,000 head capacity or larger on March 1 of this year. This was 2.6 per cent above last year's on feed number for the same point in time, writes John Michael Riley, Mississippi State University.
