Cattle slaughterings decreased by 23.9% in March
The number of cattle slaughtered in March 2012 was 23.9% lower than in March
2011.
A further comparison of March 2012 and March 2011 slaughtering figures also
shows that
- Sheep slaughterings increased by 1.0%.
- Pig slaughterings decreased by 1.0%.
The number of cattle slaughtered in January-March 2012 was 10.5% lower than
the corresponding 2011 period. Over the same period there was an increase of
6.0% in sheep slaughterings and an increase of 7.4% in pig slaughtering.
Comparing EU figures for the periods January 2012 to January 2011, Ireland
showed a 2.4% increase in cattle slaughterings while of the major EU cattle
producing countries, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain and France recorded
decreases of 13.7%, 11.2%, 1.1% and 0.1% respectively.
