MP Elections: Congress, BJP Trade Charges over Depleting Cattle Strength

02 November 2018

INDIA - Less than a month before Madhya Pradesh goes to poll, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) traded charges over depleting strength of cows in the state and proliferation of slaughterhouses on Wednesday.

According to The Indian Express, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Kamal Nath, one of the two contenders for the chief minister’s post, said that the number of cattle heads reduced by as many as 23.13 lakh in the state in last five years under CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan rule.

In a series of tweets, the former Union minister quoted the latest animal census to point out that overall 43.62 lakh animals, including 9.41 lakh buffaloes, disappeared in MP and wondered if illegal slaughterhouse were functioning in the state. He said the total number of cows in the state was down to 1.96 crore from 2.19 crore five years ago.

Chairman of executive council of state cow protection board Swami Akhileshwarnand accused the Congress leader of misleading the country. He alleged that meat export increased during Congress rule. He said most licences for slaughterhouses were issued in the country when Congress was in power.

He said there were 824 cattle head per 1,000 persons when the country became independent. From 130 crore, the cattle population in the country was down to 10 crore, out of which nearly one-fifth were found in MP alone, he said.
