The programme aims to demonstrate clear advances in on-farm productivity by monitoring performance and implementing best practice. The farms will focus on medium to long-term activity to target improvements in areas such as health, nutrition and genetics, in order to meet the overall objective of increasing the number of stock meeting target specification.

In total, six farms, covering a range of farming systems, will take part in the programme for a minimum of two years. Each farm will be benchmarked using the AHDB whole-farm benchmarking service Farmbench and appropriate targets will be set for improving output and performance.

Participating farms will be supported by AHDB experts and other specialist consultants to drive improvements in selected areas and will host two or three technical events each year to communicate the progress achieved.

AHDB Beef & Lamb Head of Knowledge Exchange Clive Brown said: “At a headline level, 45 per cent of lambs and 48 per cent of cattle in 2015 failed to meet target specification for fat or carcase conformation, therefore increasing the number of livestock meeting market requirements is one of the objectives set out in our new strategy.

“Our Strategic Farm Programme is a key activity within our broader programme of supply chain work which aims to address this issue of product inconsistency.

“We are looking to recruit producers to the programme who are keen to improve their overall business performance and are happy to share their learnings and experience with the broader industry.”

Producers who are interested in taking part in the AHDB Beef & Lamb Strategic Farm Programme register your interest contact Joseph Keating, Knowledge Exchange Manager, on 07972 622613 or email ku.gro.bdha@prb by Friday, 12 May.
