Georgia Soils Improved By Intensive Grazing

US – Heavy grazing can improve the performance and organic matter content of soil, concludes a study looking at dairy cows on converted arable land.

Soils also had higher cation exchange capacity and water holding capacity after two to seven years of intensive dairy grazing, following improvements to organic matter.

The University of Georgia study grazed cows at a stocking rate of 30-60 animal units per acre for twelve hour periods, being rotated every 15-45 days and moved twice daily.

Grasses were hybrids of Bermuda and stargrass overseeded with annual ryegrass.
