Heifer Retention Pushes Brazilian Cattle Slaughter Down

BRAZIL – A fall in heifer slaughter is behind a year on year reduction in Brazilian cattle slaughter.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geographic and Statistics (IBGE), first quarter cattle slaughter fell eight per cent year on year and nine per cent on the previous quarter.

Heifer slaughter slumped to the lowest level for the period since 2011, accounting for 44 per cent of total slaughter.

Lower slaughter has been widespread across Mato Grosso - Brazil’s premier cattle state -, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goias.

Analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) summarised the report. “Led by the high calf prices, producers are retaining cows, further limiting beef supplies, but indicating a possible recovery of the herd in the coming years," said MLA analysts.

“Many producing regions in Brazil are receiving above average rain this winter, which will assist pasture growth and animal weight gain.”
