E-coli Findings Prompt Tyson Ground Beef Recall

04 June 2015

US - Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc., is voluntarily recalling approximately 16,000 pounds of 80 per cent Lean Ground Beef in 5-pound chubs, after findings of e-coli.

Through the company's routine sampling programme, a sample of the product analyzed by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service was found to contain E. coli O157:H7.

There have been no reported illnesses related to this food. The voluntary recall is being initiated as a precaution. Tyson Fresh Meats is in the process of accounting for the affected product and placing it on hold.

Approximately 200 cases of this ground beef were produced at one plant location on May 16, 2015.

Each 5-pound chub bears the establishment code 245C and a “best before or freeze by” date of June 5, 2015.

Product cases may be identified by code D-0371-BH which is printed on the exterior label.

Food safety experts advise consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160 °F. The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.

The product was distributed to one food distributor in New York state.
