Pig slaughterers reported a 3.7 per cent increase in throughput at 772,000 head, leaving pork production at 65,000 tonnes.

This is a year on year increase of six per cent, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs revealed yesterday.

Beef production inched three per cent higher to 66,000 tonnes, despite lower slaughterings than June 2013 as heavy carcase weights kept production up.

Eight per cent more sheep were slaughtered year on year for June at 907,000 head. Mutton and lamb production was 21,000 tonnes (five per cent) higher.
