Adapting New Technologies Focus of Beef Day at Yorkshire College11 June 2014
UK - Beef producers will have the opportunity to hear firsthand about the benefits of adopting new technologies on farm at an RASE organised event on 1st July 2014 at Askham Bryan College, Yorkshire.
The Beef Technology Day will see leading farmers, vets and industry experts coming together to look at how the use of science, technology and ICT can improve efficiency and farm performance.
Dr Kirsty Moore from Scottish Rural University College will open the day discussing ongoing research surround beef genetics and where the industry is heading. Paul Westaway will then demonstrate this research in practice, talking about the use of genomics in his pedigree Angus herd.
Mike Powley has recently been involved in an on-farm trial using heat detection collars on cows kept at grass, and will share the results but also his thoughts on the efficacy of this with attendees.
Robert Neill and Neil Rowe, both Nuffield scholars, provide excellent case studies when it comes to adopting new technologies, particularly EID. Dan King from Bishopton Vets will also talk about the possibilities of recording core body temperature and what this might imply about animal health and early disease indicators.
After lunch feed efficiency will be addressed, with an update from the National Feed Efficiency unit on recent trials at Givendale. Finally, beef producer John Yeoman and Elwyn Pugh and Stuart Roberts from ABP will look at alternative grading systems for beef carcases.
The event will start at 10am and finish at 3.15pm. There is a £10 charge for the day to cover catering costs.
