US – Cattlemen worried about animal welfare during shipping can relax after livestock was granted a one year exemption from new transportation rules demanding motor vehicle operators take half hour stops.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) now requires that all drivers of motor vehicles, apart from livestock wagons, take a 30 minute rest break for every eight hours of service.
This is in addition to all refuelling, servicing and other scheduled stops.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has successfully reversed the decision of the DOT, removing much concern about heat stress this summer, according to NCBA President, Bob McCan.
Commenting on the exemption, Mr McCan said it was a ‘common-sense move’ and was hopeful of making it permanent.
“This is great news for livestock producers and for the health of our herds,” said Mr McCan. “As we come into summer, cattle producers have expressed concerns to the DOT that these rules would jeopardize the health and safety of our cattle.”
