OIE Reports FMD Outbreaks Across Tunisia
TUNISIA - The Tunisian veterinary authorities have reported 14 outbreaks of foot and mouth disease at various farms located in Ariana, Kairouan, Sidi Bouzid, Kasserine, Monastir and Nabeul, affecting cattle, sheep and goats.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 2 on Tuesday, 13 May, stating that a total of 459 cattle were found susceptible, out of which 20 cases were reported. No deaths were recorded and no animals were destroyed. One animal was taken to slaughter.
The OIE, in conjunction with the country's competent authorities, have applied several control measures to contain the situation. Some of the measures include quarantine, movement control inside the country, vaccination in response to the outbreak(s), disinfection of infected premises and/or establishments and modified stamping out.
According to the OIE, in addition to the control measures mentioned, the following measures are being implemented: Crisis cells at national and regional levels, burying of the fifth quarter and bones between two layers of lime, disinfection of vehicles leaving the affected governorates, vaccination points of susceptible species at the entrance of livestock markets, epidemiological investigation to determine the origin of the infection and a communication plan.
Illegal movement of animals has been traced as the main cause of the outbreaks.
