China Reports New Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak

CHINA - The Chinese veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease at a cattle farm in Jiangxi.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Friday, 18 April. On the same date, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests were conducted at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute. Both tests proved the presence of the FMD virus.

According to the report, six animals were reportedly affected by the FMD virus, serotype O. A total of 18 animals were destroyed.

Several control measures such as stamping out, movement control inside the country, screening, zoning, disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s) and dipping/spraying. Vaccination has not been administered on the animals, and the affected animals have not been treated.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
