New NFU President Elected

03 February 2014

UK - Meurig Raymond has been elected the new President of the National Farmers Union.

Mr Raymond, a mixed farmer from Pembrokeshire, succeeds Peter Kendall who stood down from the role after eight years in office. Minette Batters, a beef farmer from Wiltshire, was elected Deputy President and Guy Smith, an arable farmer from Essex, was elected Vice President.

Mr Raymond, who had been the NFU’s Deputy President for the last eight years, said: “I’m extremely proud to be leading an organisation like the NFU and I’m grateful that the membership and NFU Council have supported me in the way they have.

“What has been achieved over the past few years has been phenomenal. We need to convince the policy makers, retailers, consumers and society of the importance of food production and British farming and that we, as farmers, can help to grow the rural economy.

“When you look back over our conference and see how much optimism and confidence there was for the Back British Farming campaign I think we have a really bright future.”

Ms Batters, who is the NFU’s first female national officeholder, said: “It is a huge honour for me to be elected Deputy President of the NFU. I’m delighted and I’d like to thank the South West region, which has been through such a challenging time, for its support. I’m looking forward to the challenge. It’s up to us as officeholders to make sure our members get what they want.”

Mr Smith said: “I’m really looking forward to working with Meurig and Minette. I have a passion for explaining our industry better to non-farming industries and I hope this role will give me the opportunity to do that more.”

Dairy UK Chief Executive Dr Judith Bryans said: “This is great news and a well-deserved win. I’d like to extend my warmest congratulations to Meurig on behalf of Dairy UK.

“Peter Kendall did an outstanding job for the NFU and British agriculture over the last eight years and will be missed but I have no doubt Meurig will show great leadership and vision for the NFU. I look forward to a fruitful continued collaboration with Meurig and his team on dairy matters.”
