IRELAND – The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) is expecting a €2 billion upsurge in demand for Irish beef offal products, following the re-opening of the Japanese market.

Particular opportunities lie in mountain chain (tripe) and tongue exports, which could reach €10 million to €15 million a year, IFA President John Bryan said on Monday.

He described the announcement as ‘very significant and positive’ for the livestock sector, praising the efforts of the Department of Agriculture and Bord Bia in negotiations to lift the ban.

Japanese market ties were severed in 2000 due to BSE concerns in ban covering Ireland and the rest of Europe.

Mr Bryan concluded that markets for higher priced cuts can be developed from the foundation of offal trading.
