October Cattle on Feed Report Shows 8 per cent Drop on Last Year

US – Cattle on feed numbers through October were eight per cent lower than last year, although placements lifted to over 2 million, the most since May.

The report confirmed an overall numbers rise of 268,000 and a placement increase of 287,000 on September, as feedlot numbers rose to 10.144 million.

The US Department of Agriculture Cattle on Feed Report showed 64 per cent of feeder cattle were steers, at 6.44 million and heifers at 3.66 million, down six and eight per cent respectively.

Placement weights favoured heavier cattle, as 735,000 animals were placed at 800 pounds of more.

Marketings lifted to 1.7 million, six per cent above 2012.
