Red Meat Exports to China Boom

AUSTRALIA - While Japan is comfortably Australia’s largest red meat export market (beef & veal, lamb, mutton and goat meat), China is rapidly growing its demand for Australian red meat, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.

Over the past financial year, China surpassed Korea and took third position in Australia’s top red meat export destinations, with volumes increasing more than four-fold, year-on-year, soaring to a total of 163,363 tonnes, according to data from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

In addition to the emergence of developing markets, such as China, the tough economic climate in Japan has contributed to an eight per cent year-on-year decline in Australian red meat exports, to 309,872 tonnes during 2012-13.

In contrast, exports to the US increased six per cent year-on-year, reaching 271,090 tonnes, while shipments to Korea increased 12 per cent, with a total 141,564 tonnes shipped.
