Future Diagnostic Tests for BSE to be Validated

HONDURAS - In order to validate future diagnostic techniques for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), more commonly known as mad cow disease, authorities from the National Service for Agriculture and Livestock Health (SENASA) received a visit from Volley Rosa, an expert in animal pathology and a professor at the University of Zaragoza in Spain.

The validation is expected to strengthen and improve the presentation to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and to achieve disease-free status so as to allow sales of beef in foreign markets.

"BSE is an exotic disease to Honduras. To date we have had no reports of any cases. It is for this reason that we are strengthening the epidemiological surveillance of cattle populations in our country in order to be categorized with better health status," said Heriberto Amador, CEO of SENASA.

"We are looking for strategies to further strengthen the cattle population for meat and milk production in our country. We have the support of the Honduras Chamber for Livestock Development (CAFOGA) the private sector, the National Farmers Federation of Honduras (FENAGH)," Mr Amador continued.

Meanwhile, Professor Rosa expressed gratitude for the provision of technicians to implement new diagnostic methodologies.
