School Opens Purebred/Crossbred Debate

10 January 2013
Ohio State University

US - Cattlemen searching for the latest information to better prepare themselves for future involvement in the beef industry are invited to participate in the 2013 Ohio Beef Cattle School.

The first session of this three session school is rapidly approaching on January 29, 2013 and promises a lively discussion on one of the most important issues facing cow-calf producers today.

The January 29, 2013 program features two well-respected and recognizable industry names serving as resources for that session. Lee Leachman, Leachman Cattle Company of Colorado, and Dr. Nevil Speer, Professor of Animal Science at Western Kentucky University, will discuss the subject "Breeding Considerations in Today's Beef Industry."

Leachman will present "Today's Hybrid Genetics - No Kin to Your Neighbor's Black Baldy Bull". Hybrid genetics have dominated the swine, poultry, and plant industries. However, factors have allowed purebreds to dominate the dairy and beef seedstock industries.

Dr. Speer will discuss the apparent de-emphasis on heterosis by some commercial cow-calf producers and how advanced genetic selection tools, an evolving genetic base, and the growth of quality-driven markets have contributed to this phenomenon.

The topic of using purebred or crossbred seedstock in commercial cow-calf production is one of the most hotly debated subjects within the beef industry today. The debate can be found nearly everywhere from beef-related popular press, auction barns, and breed associations, to academic institutions.

Current economic conditions are driving this discussion as producers are searching out any and all means to improve production efficiencies and improve their bottom line. This program should help you sort out the genetic concepts that make the most sense for your operation.

The second session of the 2013 Ohio Beef Cattle School will be held on February 26 and will focus on the topic "Squeezing Every Dollar out of Forage Production."

The final installment of the school will be held on March 19, 2013 and will focus on "Enterprises to Remain Competitive in the Beef Industry."
