Tönnies Increases Beef Slaughter Capacity

GERMANY - German meat processor Tönnies has significantly boosted capacity at its Jade slaughterhouse in Wilhelmshaven.

The capacity at the plant has risen from 2,000 to 3,000 head of cattle slaughtered a week through expansion and the modernisation of buildings at a cost of around €2.8 million over the last 18 months.

The Jade slaughterhouse is closely linked to cattle production in the northwest of Lower Saxony and the Wilhelmshaven operation takes deliveries from the region from a radius of up to 180 km.

After slaughtering and cutting to halves and quarters, the chilled beef is shipped to Tönnies' main processing facility at Rheda-Wiedenbrück, which eliminates long live transport of animalsaccording to Tönnies CEO Josef Tillmann.

The investment included the construction of administrative and social buildings, the expansion and renovation of the cold stores, work to the outdoor area including the yard and transportation areas as well as a new lairage area for live animals, the installation of a new washdown area and an area for cleaning the vehicles.

The modernisation and expansion of the plant was carried out in close cooperation with the local energy supplier GEW and the town of Wilhelmshaven.

GEW CEO Josef Thomann said that they had managed with the Jade slaughterhouse to implement an economically and ecologically meaningful system that includes a combined heat and power system, reducing energy consumption by half.

Mr Tillmann said Tönnies had long-term commitment in Wilhelmshaven at the Jade slaughterhouse which the company had taken over in 2006 from the Vosding group.
