The decrease in production is the result of a decline in overall cattle slaughter, reflecting the sustained reduction in the EU cattle herd in recent years.

EU beef production is tipped to total 7.831 million tonnes in 2012, back from 8.206 million tonnes in 2011. Furthermore, beef production in 2013 is forecast to contract again, with the EU commission predicting another one per cent decrease in production. Interestingly, beef imports are forecast to contract 6.4 per cent in 2012, as limited global beef supplies, sluggish domestic demand and the relative weakness of the Euro supresses beef imports.

The EU commission predicts that overall meat production within the EU (including beef) will decrease by six per cent in 2012.
