Earlier this month, a team of Korean government inspectors visited the US to confirm that the BSE discovery on 24 April was a rare “atypical” case in a cow that did not enter the food or feed supply chain.

In response to the news, Lotte Mart, the retailer that temporarily halted sales of US beef after the BSE announcement, resumed sales of US beef last weekend. The retail giant also reported that the incident did not cause consumer confusion or anxiety, and there have been many requests for US beef. US beef is currently available in all of Korea’s major discount retailers.

Korea’s quarantine services, however, continues to inspect half of all imported US beef cartons to ensure the products meet import regulations.
