US Impacts Japan's Manufacturing Beef Intake

US - Australia exported 23,457 tonnes swt of beef to Japan in February, 22 per cent below last year and the five-year average. Manufacturing beef exports (almost 100 per cent frozen) reduced significantly (down 36 per cent to 6,796 tonnes), largely due to strong demand for CL items from the US and other international markets.

Exports of 65CL to Japan during the month fell 57 per cent from 2011 to 1,918 tonnes, as shipments to the US increased by 1,136 tonnes year-on-year to 1,160 tonnes. Russia took 458 tonnes of the same CL items (up 125 per cent compared with last year), while the Philippines and the Middle East region also geared up their intake.

Another popular item among Japanese food manufacturers is 85CL product, however, in February shipments to Japan decreased 45 per cent to 1,344 tonnes, while the exports to the US surged by 173 per cent to 4,729 tonnes.

The strong bids from the US reportedly influenced market expectations for CL products across the board, resulting in limited buying by Japanese buyers.

Besides the reduction in manufacturing beef exports, the unfavourable currency situation continued to challenge Australian chilled beef shipments to Japan, with volumes declining 26 per cent year-on-year to 10,239 tonnes.
