The seminars are designed to discuss how beef producers can maximise profit by understanding and meeting the specifications of various markets.

Department beef supply chain officer Hayley Robinson said it was important for producers to understand the supply-demand curve and how it could influence pricing, whilst ensuring on-farm practice maximised the chance of cattle meeting the requirements of potential buyers.

“In 2009-10, six per cent of Western Australian cattle graded under the Meat Standards Australia system did not meet specification requirements, costing producers $900 000 in lost revenue,” Ms Robinson said.

“A study in 2009 found that 28 per cent of cattle in the study group (short fed export market) did not meet target weight and chiller assessment specifications, which cost producers money and impacted profits along the rest of the supply chain.”

The seminars offer an opportunity to hear from industry representatives throughout the supply chain to clarify what is required to create the maximum value for cattle to meet customer requirements.

Ms Robinson said topics covered in the seminars include alternative marketing options; how on-farm practices can affect the eating quality, carcase value and return on your cattle; and tools to make meeting market specifications much easier.

The seminars will now take place at Badgingarra on 24 February, Esperance on 27 February, Mt Barker on 29 February and Bridgetown on 9 March. Producers should note the dates have changed since the first promotional information was distributed.

The cost for a full day seminar is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Register by contacting the Department of Agriculture and Food Albany on 9892 8444 or [email protected] by 17 February. Detailed seminar information is available by contacting Hayley Robinson on 9368 3363 or [email protected] or Lauren Johnston on 9780 6108 or emailing [email protected]
