NCBA: Brazil Exports Down, but Production Up

BRAZIL - Despite expanding the cow herd, exports from Brazil were down 15 per cent in 2011, the lowest level in five years, said Brett Stuart, from CattleFax at the NCBA Convention and Trade Show. Charlotte Johnston, TheCattleSite editor reports.

Bucking global trends, Brazil has seen an increase in beef production over the last year, after a national effort to increase the cow inventory.

However, despite this increase in production, Brazil saw exports fall 15 per cent in 2011, despite an increase in export value of 10 per cent.

The reason for this, Mr Stuart explained is that per capita income in Brazil has doubled over the last eight years.

With a wealthier population, the domestic demand for beef has increased putting pressure on export supplies.

This has left the market open for the US, who saw beef exports reach all time highs last year. This trend of success for US exports is likely to continue as it fills in for Brazil, taking on new customers abroad.
