Mr Alexander will take over as President for the NCBA from Bill Donald.

"I will do all I can as President of the NCBA to increase beef demand and producer profitablity," he told the audience of cattlemen at the General Session.

"This can be done without government intervention, decisions made need to ensure that our future generations can take on the business.

"There is a huge danger of laws, which I believe should be illegal, which could prevent younger generations from coming into farming."

Death tax

The death tax is outdated, Mr Alexander said. In fact it was introduced after World War 1.

He said that the NCBA is still working hard to to get a permanent fix on this tax.

Trade

"When trade works, the world wins." Mr Alexander pointed out that trade and exports can add up to $250 per head profit.

Beef exports last year reached record highs.

This last year the US welcomed the announcement of three free trade agreements with Columbia, Panama and South Korea.

"It has taken years of work and persistance to accomplish this, and the industry must work hard with the government and other relevant bodies to ensure that the agreements are implemented."

Despite this success, Mr Alexander said that there is stil much work to do with regard to using sound science to demonstrate to global trading partners that global beef of all ages is safe.

Noting that 2012 will be a key election year for the US, Mr Alexander said that the NCBA would be working hard to influence and elect officials who understand the importance of the US cattle industry.

2012 has seen record breaking attendance at the 2012 Cattlemen's Convention. Mr Alexander said it was great to see so many young people enthusiastic to be in the industry.

Concluding he said that 2012 will go down as the best year to be a cattleman.
