"Now is a great time to own cows," Mr Brink said.

"So long as you have a competitive cost structure and the right genetics and management to compete in today's market."

Answering questions, the majority of the audience said that they were looking to expand their cow-calf operations over the next year.

This was received well by Mr Brink, who said that feedlots were ready to receive more cattle.

He said that his feedlot aimed to finish cattle between 1350 and 1400 pounds. As even with corn at $7 a bushel these cattle will make a $50 per head advantage over cattle 100 pounds lighter.

If corn prices go down then this advantage obviously increases.

He said for cow-calf producers who had to breed from smaller cows for environmental reasons, bulls that will improve performance and frame are vital.
