Supplies lift after public holiday

National cattle yardings at MLA's NLRS reported markets returned to normal as a number of selling centres resumed operating after the public holiday in NSW and SA.

Throughput lifted 40 per cent compared to the previous week, however numbers were around 11 per cent lower year-on-year.

Queensland supplies were back by nine per cent, with the chance of rain late in the week holding back numbers, while NSW supply more than doubled. Victorian supply was more stable, while numbers returned to normal across SA. WA consignments were also unchanged, with the improved seasonal conditions slowing turn off.

Quality young cattle

The weight and condition of prime yearling cattle improved yet again with the best lines either off crops or supplementary fed. A fair amount of store drafts were also yarded, with producers turning off secondary lines in the wake of the strong restocker presence.

Restockers drive the EYCI

After Tuesday's markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 2.75¢ above last week, on 398.75¢/kg cwt - or nine per cent higher year-on-year.

Trade steer prices fell by 7¢ to 214¢ and the feeder steer indicator was stable on 213¢/kg lwt. Heavy steers were 4¢ dearer on 199¢ and medium cow prices finished 3¢ higher on 153¢/kg lwt.
