Meat and Livestock Australis says that total imports into the market during the eight months to August were 12 per cent below the same period in 2010, at 63,460 tonnes swt, attributed to reduced volumes from India (down 18 per cent), Brazil (down 53 per cent), the US (down six per cent) and Australia (down three per cent).

Following several recalls of beef contaminated with E.coli in the US in August, the Philippines' Bureau of Animal Industry banned imports of US beef products from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The ban is expected to impact only a portion of ground beef imports from the US.

During August, wholesale prices of chilled Australian beef were reportedly stable compared with July, but below August 2010 levels.

Chilled Australian tenderloin prices decreased about 21 per cent year-on-year, to 1,100 Peso/kg (A$24.68/kg), while chilled US tenderloin prices increased two per cent, to 1,890 Peso/kg (A$42.41/kg). Prices of frozen Australian striploin, ribeye and rump remained stable, averaging 700 Peso/kg (A$15.71/kg), 900 Peso/kg (A$20.19/kg) and 450 Peso/kg (A$10.10/kg), respectively.
