‘Adding Value and Managing Costs in Small Abattoirs and Meat Processors’, is aimed at enabling small processors to carry out self-assessments to identify opportunities for improvement, reducing costs and increasing potential revenue streams.

The booklet includes advice on product disposal and how to get the best out of staff, as well as taking environmental issues into consideration when evaluating costs. Resources such as water and energy can have a significant impact on revenue if they are not monitored and managed correctly. By implementing simple procedures like turning off taps and hoses when not in use and fixing leaks, unnecessary waste can be avoided.

Laura Bishop, EBLEX marketing manager (Quality Schemes), said: “At a time when every penny counts, it is imperative for small abattoirs and meat processors to look at ways to make revenue streams go a bit further. This guide is designed to help businesses carry out a self-assessment of current procedures and to look at more cost-effective ways of operating. It contains a number of solutions that can easily be implemented.”
