MLA reports that, despite reports of weak demand, exports to NZ's largest beef market, the US, increased 27 per cent, to 7,510 tonnes, the majority being lean manufacturing beef from bulls and dairy cull cows.

With high turnoff in the US, imported lean beef is necessary for patty production. The conditions making trading difficult for some exporters are similar to those experienced in Australia, with the weak US$ meaning US importers are paying higher prices than last year, while NZ exporters are receiving a lower price, in their respective currencies (NZX Agrifax).

MLA writes that demand in Korea, ahead of Chuseok, was particularly strong in August, with NZ beef and veal shipments reaching 2,573 tonnes swt, 144 per cent above last August.

Exports to South East Asia dropped 12 per cent compared with last August, to 2,461 tonnes, with shipments to Indonesia restricted after a strong month in July (during which time quarterly import licences were filled).

Japanese demand remained weak due to unsettled economic conditions, as NZ beef and veal exports during August slipped 38 per cent compared with last year, to 1,206 tonnes swt. Exports to Canada lifted 23 per cent, to 1,049 tonnes.
