The red meat industry in the north is worth over £800million to the local economy, with the red meat processing sector employing 3,300 people.

At her first visit on a beef suckler farm in Castlewellan the Minister said: “Suckler beef production has been a cornerstone of our beef industry for many years and it is very clear that our farmers have both the skills and passion to produce top quality beef."

"The industry continues to see change and I am very encouraged that our farmers are receptive to improved production methods and new technologies which will further develop their businesses.”

Following this the Minister visited Anglo Beef Processors (ABP), Newry, where she was impressed with the level of investment in the industry.

She commented: “Our beef industry has had to invest heavily to rebuild markets and secure new business over the past decade. My Department will continue to work closely with farmers and processors to help secure a profitable beef industry, which can provide sustained employment and much needed income in our rural communities.”

Her visits highlighted the importance of the local beef industry to the rural economy and demonstrated the linkages through the supply chain from beef farmer to consumer.

She concluded: “A sustainable beef industry is vitally important to our economy. ABP have shown a high level of commitment to our local beef industry and has fostered strong links with farmers and their customers including major retailers, food service outlets and secondary processors. Together, ABP and their dedicated supply base of progressive farmers, have demonstrated that they are responsive to the needs of all their customers.”
