A positive supply trend was consistently recorded across the states, yet national numbers are 14% lower year-on-year.

Queensland once again penned the most numbers, as supply rose by 21 per cent with all regions contributing more supply. Overall NSW throughput was stable, while numbers were three per cent higher across Victoria. SA supply was largely unchanged again, while consignments were 48 per cent higher in WA after more pastoral cattle were yarded at Muchea.

Crop finished yearlings emerge

The condition of young cattle has improved with a higher proportion of yardings either supplementary fed or straight off winter oat crops. However, plenty of store drafts remain in the market as is usually the case during the cooler months. Cows and grown steers are of good quality, with plenty of medium and heavy weight cows now coming forward.

Cattle prices mixed

After Tuesday's markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 6¢ lower for the week, on 372.75¢.kg cwt. The trade steer indicator was 5¢ dearer on 215¢, while feeder steer prices averaged 8¢ cheaper on 194¢/kg lwt. Heavy steer prices were unchanged on 176¢ and medium cow finished 2¢ higher on 138¢/kg lwt.
